Ground Mount vs Rooftop Solar Design: Key Engineering Differences
The most common mistake in ground-mount design is treating it like a rooftop project with a different racking system. The engineering, the permitting, and the utility coordination diverge in ways that affect every sheet in the plan set.
Structural design is the first major difference. A rooftop system attaches to an existing structure and the structural analysis focuses on roof loading — dead load, live load, wind uplift, and attachment pull-out. A ground-mount system creates the structure. The designer must account for soil conditions, foundation type (driven piles, helical piles, ballasted, or concrete piers), embedment depth, wind exposure category, frost depth, and ground snow load. A geotechnical report is strongly recommended and frequently required by the AHJ.
Electrical design scales differently on the ground. DC string lengths are often longer, which means higher voltage and larger conductor sizes. The combiner box or string inverter location must account for the distance between rows and the AC collection point. Trenching and underground conduit runs introduce conduit fill calculations, burial depth requirements (NEC 300.5), and ground fault considerations that do not exist on a rooftop.
Permitting is more complex. Ground-mount systems frequently trigger site plan review, grading permits, environmental review (particularly in jurisdictions with wetland, floodplain, or agricultural preservation rules), and sometimes conditional use permits. Setback requirements from property lines and public roads are jurisdiction-specific and can reduce the usable area significantly. The permitting timeline for a ground mount can be 3 to 6 months versus 2 to 4 weeks for a residential rooftop.
Interconnection changes too. Larger ground-mount systems often connect at medium voltage, requiring a step-up transformer, a different point of interconnection, and potentially an impact study from the utility. Even smaller ground mounts on residential properties may require a separate meter or a different interconnection agreement.
The plan set reflects all of this. A ground-mount permit package typically includes a civil site plan with grading and drainage, a foundation detail sheet, a trenching and conduit plan, an equipment pad layout, and more sheets overall than a rooftop set. Designers who price ground-mount sets the same as rooftop sets are either cutting corners or losing money. Know the differences, scope them properly, and build the set for the reviewer who is going to check every one of them.
