NEC 2023 Rapid Shutdown: What Installers Must Know

Rapid shutdown is still the single most common reason a residential plan set comes back with comments. The requirement itself is short: conductors more than one metre inside the array boundary must drop to 80 volts or less within 30 seconds, and conductors outside that boundary must drop to 30 volts or less in the same window. What trips people up is proving it on paper.

Plan reviewers do not evaluate your hardware. They evaluate your drawing. If the set does not name the rapid shutdown equipment, show the initiating device location, and place the labels where 690.56(C) requires them, the reviewer has no basis to approve it — even when the system is fully compliant as installed.

Three details account for most of the rejections we see. First, the initiator: the drawing must show a single, clearly identified means of shutdown accessible from outside the building, and the label must match the actual device. Second, the array boundary: draw it. A dashed one-metre offset around the array on the roof plan removes any ambiguity about which conductors are governed by which limit. Third, module-level electronics: if you are using MLPE to achieve compliance, the module and optimiser or microinverter pairing must appear in the equipment schedule with the listing that covers the combination.

The 2023 cycle also tightened labelling language. Reflective, weather-resistant labels with the exact wording from 690.56(C)(1) and (2), placed at the service disconnect and at the rapid shutdown initiator, are non-negotiable in most jurisdictions. Generic 'SOLAR PV SYSTEM' placards will not clear a careful reviewer.

The practical takeaway: treat rapid shutdown as a drafting problem, not an equipment problem. Every set we produce carries the boundary, the initiator, the equipment listing, and the placard schedule as standard content — because it costs us five minutes and it costs you two weeks when it is missing.
