NEC 705.12 Busbar Calculation: Step-by-Step for Solar Installers

NEC 705.12 governs how solar output connects to the existing service panel. The core rule is the 120 percent provision: the sum of the main breaker rating and the solar backfeed breaker cannot exceed 120 percent of the busbar rating. Miss this on paper and the reviewer sends it back before reading another page.

Start with the panel nameplate. A standard 200 A residential panel has a 200 A busbar. 120 percent of 200 A is 240 A. The main breaker is 200 A, so the maximum solar backfeed breaker is 240 minus 200, which equals 40 A. If the inverter's continuous output current requires a 50 A breaker, the system fails the 120 percent test on this panel.

The fix is one of three paths. First, a main breaker derate: replace the 200 A main with a 150 A main. Now the headroom is 240 minus 150, which is 90 A — more than enough for a 50 A backfeed breaker. Second, a line-side tap: connect the solar ahead of the main breaker using a line-side tap kit listed for the panel. This removes the 120 percent constraint entirely but introduces its own NEC requirements and AHJ preferences. Third, a panel upgrade: if the existing panel is undersized or full, upgrade to a panel with a higher busbar rating.

The drawing must show the calculation clearly. Best practice is a dedicated note block on the single-line diagram with the formula, the values, and the result. Do not bury it in a general notes sheet. Reviewers look for it on the SLD because that is where the connection is shown.

Common mistakes we catch in QA: using the inverter's maximum output current instead of the breaker rating; forgetting that NEC sizes backfeed breakers at 125 percent of continuous current; listing the main breaker size but not the busbar rating; and omitting the calculation entirely because the system uses microinverters. Microinverter systems still need the 705.12 check — the combined branch circuit breaker ratings matter.
